As I am writing this I am enjoying some Double Eagle tobacco in an Andrew Marks bent egg overlooking the Texas hill country in beautiful Austin Texas. Double Eagle is blended by Jack Peterson the master blender over at Sterling Tobacco Co and a master he is. Double eagle is decribed as a light aromatic, that is delightfully mild and cool. The tobacco an air cured, cube cut burley that is very mild and is reminiscent of old Prince Albert, or Edgeworth. Opening the bag you are hit with a wonderful aroma of vanilla, and figs. The tobacco moisture was just perfect out of the bag. I was amazed at how cool this tobacco smokes, the vanilla flavor is great but not overpowering and the nutty burley flavor develops about halfway through the smoke. This tobacco is simply wonderful, I am very surprised at the quality of tobacco, and the consistancy of the smoke. I’d like to commend Jack and the team over at Sterling Tobacco for such a wonderful smoke. Highly recommended. I should also let you know that Sterling is offering a free sample of one of their blends and would suggest that you head over now and pick up a free sample of Double Eagle while the offer is still on the table. Here is how to get your hands on some:

To try a FREE sample of our pipe tobacco
send your name, street address, age,
and brand of tobacco you now smoke to,
Sterling Tobacco Co. PO Box 1151, Sterling, IL 61081

For those of you that are not familiar with G.L. Pease let me formally introduce you: he is the maker of some of the finest tobacco blends of our time. If you have not had the pleasure of trying some of his blends I highly recommend them. In fact here at pipe-smokers.net over Christmas, we gave away a tin of G.L. Pease new blend Chelsea Morning to the lucky reader Chris! Chris I hope your enjoying the gift!

G.L. Pease is currently on the brink of releasing his latest creation, an answer of sorts to Chelsea Morning which he tentatively named Quiet Nights. It turns out that the name for some reason was not as well received as he had hoped. So here is your chance to weigh in and lend a suggestion to his latest blend. So get the creative juices flowing and head over to G.L. Pease and give him a suggestion for this latest blend. Cheers and happy smoking.

**Update the naming suggestions are currently closed, but its still a fun read to look through all the suggestions.

I recently got a comment from Harold reviewing some of the Boswell’s blends that he and some of his Army buddies have tried in the recent moths. I deiced to make Harold’s comment into its own post for two reasons, first because I wanted to take a second to honor our heroes like Harold and his friends for serving and protecting our great country, and second because it was so well written. Thanks Harold for your service to our country, and for visiting my silly pipe smoking website and taking time to share your thoughts. Happy smoking to you and your friends.

From Harold:

I am a young (I find that at 26 I am young to be pursuing pipe smoking) pipe smoking enthusiast who is still learning to understand the finer points of the craft. Currently I am the executive officer of an Army Infantry company stationed in Iraq. After noticing that my Commander and First Sergeant were developing an interest in pipe smoking, I decided to order some blends from Boswell’s so they could experience something more enjoyable than Captain Black. I ordered Mild English, Cherry Smash, Bear blend, Hunter’s Choice and Northwoods. So far, we are all dazzled by Boswell’s blends! As you mentioned with Berry Cobler, the Cherry Smash actually TASTES of cherries, which I’ve never experienced before. It’s very subtle, however, and amazingly smooth. Prior to the Cherry Smash we smoked a great deal of the Mild English, which was very good as well. As you can imagine, the transition from a purely smoking-oriented tobacco to an aromatic cherry blend was really something. The difference in character was astounding. We’re slowly rotating through them all, so when we have finished the Cherry Smash we’re moving on to the Bear Blend. I must admit, however, that I look forward to Hunter’s Choice more than the rest. You’ve got to smell the stuff to believe it… it’s going to make for a great smoke in my churchwarden!

It’s a simple straight forward layout that allows you to share with the pipe smoking community notes and information about each tin, age, condition and amount. You can even post your super old and rare tin for sale. I have just started my cellar and am looking forward to having a central place online to organize and share my small but mighty tobacco collection. Head on over to our friends at http://www.tobaccocellar.org and start your online cellar today. If you’ve already got one started or start one after reading this post, please leave a comment and link and let me know, I’d love to read what others have in their cellar. Thanks and happy smoking!

I love classic shaped pipes. Stanwell, and Peterson are currently my favorite brands because they smoke great, they break in quickly, good price point, and they have mastered the classic shapes. I currently have my eye on a new Peterson Rosslare Royal Irish Black Sandblasted (106). It is everything I love in a pipe, clean lines, beautiful sandblasted finish, acrylic bit, and stunning silver work. I just simply wanted to share this beauty with my readers, and beg that someone out there want to buy me an earl birthday present? haha

Just curious what is your favorite pipe shape?

A few weeks ago I received my first Stanwell pipe and I am now a fan for life! For the price, smoke-ability, style and beautiful sandblasted finish you cannot beat a Stanwell. Surprisingly one of my favorite aspects of this pipe is the saddle stem. It is just a beautiful stem polished to perfection and the crown over the S stands out in a crowd. This Golden Danish is on the short side but is so conformable in the mouth as it is very light. Unfortunately this style was discontinued for the US in 2003, but this Stanwell’s ‘13′ saddle-stemmed Billiard shape will be a new favorite for years to come!

Last night I had the privilege of trying for the first time Presbyterian Mixture. I was very impressed! Presbyterian Mixture is a fantastic Oriental blend, that lives up to its hype. I first thought this was a straight english blend but after some smoking I believe it is a straight oriental, but feel free to correct me if I’m wrong. The smoking of PM is superb, and in my limited experience with oriental blends this is the best I’ve tried. The flavor is unchanging throughout the entire smoke and continues without any sour flavors. There is absolutely no bite with this blend and, it packs quite a punch (you might get the dizzy head if you go too fast). The bowl is left clean and no goo is present after the smoke.
