			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Estate pipes are a relatively inexpensive way to obtain good wood. Those taking up pipe smoking most likely should buy their first few good pipes new, as pitfalls exist among estate pipes that could easily sour one on the art of pipe smoking. </p>
<p>And those that have been accumulating good pipes for years have likely developed preferences that make finding suitable pipes on the estate market difficult. But between these two times in one&#8217;s life as a pipe smoker, there is a time when the need for numbers of good pipes is likely to be greater than one&#8217;s ability to pay for them at pipe shop prices, or even at prices charged by those that buy, clean, sanitize, and resell estate pipes. </p>
<p>Making the rounds of actual estate sales, flea markets, and antique shops may allow acquisition of good pipes at very low cost. Dunhills, Lorenzos, GBDs, Petersons, Savinellis, and other good pipes costing $2.00 to $10.00 are neither common nor unknown, and one good haul of a dozen to three dozen pipes for a total cost of under $100.00 can form the core of a good pipe collection. </p>
<p>These good pipes, however, are usually &#8220;as was&#8221; when their former owner no longer needed them, and old pipe smokers may be notable for use of their pipes but they generally are not noted for cleaning them. Strong measures are often needed. </p>
<p>The instructions following are those I follow when cleaning and sanitizing briars. Some may consider my approach unnecessarily thorough. After all, the heat of burning tobacco will sanitize the bowl, the mouthpiece can be cleaned with alcohol, and the toxic effects of nicotine and other components in tobacco will likely discourage growth of bacteria in the shank. I disagree. I consider hygiene very important, and do not consider alcohol alone sufficient as a cleanser. (Note that in restaurants, tableware and plates must be rinsed at 170 degrees Fahrenheit to kill tuberculosis bacteria, and one usually does not heat a shank or mouthpiece to that temperature.) </p>
<p>I also much prefer a cleaning method that minimizes the taste of tobacco remnant in the pipe, which usually does not match my personal preferences. </p>
<p>Materials Needed </p>
<p>You will need alcohol to dissolve residues and leach out tobacco juices that have soaked into the wood of the bowl and shank. I prefer grain alcohol, but 151-proof rum, any distilled spirits, or isopropyl alcohol or ethanol from the drug store will all work fine. Likewise &#8220;sterilizing solution&#8221; (grain alcohol sold via medical supplies channels) and &#8220;technical alcohol&#8221;(sold via industrial supply channels). Before using isopropyl or other alcohols not expressly intended for drinking, smell it. If you would not like that taste in your pipe, you need to find one with a different denaturant, that hasa pleasing or at least a neutral aroma. </p>
<p>You will need chlorine laundry bleach to soak and sanitize the mouthpiece. Chlorox works fine, as do other laundry bleaches. </p>
<p>You will need pipe cleaners, of course. Those that have bristly plastic fibers in them help clean out heavy residues of crud, and you may need both fat (&#8220;fluffy&#8221;) and skinny regular pipe cleaners. Pipe shops usually have little brushes, that look like tiny bottle brushes, that can be used to clean the interior of shank and mouthpiece. </p>
<p>And you will need salt. Regular table salt is fine. It does not need to be iodized, but it is ok if it is. </p>
<p>You will need paper towels to wipe up alcohol spilled. The alcohol will remove wax from the pipe, and dissolve or leach out stain and pigments applied to give the pipe a pleasing color and appearance, so use care. I know I will always spill some alcohol on a pipe being throughly cleaned, so the first thing I do is wipe the pipe down with a paper towel wet with alcohol. This lightens the color evenly, and after the cleaning and sanitizing is finished I use a Dunhill Pipe Care Cloth to wax and restore the finish to something I find acceptable in appearance. </p>
<p>You may need tools to ream the bowl. The old Kleen Ream adjustable tool does a good job on the walls, but does not do too well with carbon in the bottom of the bowl. It is no longer made, but there is a modern version with a different name (?El Senior?). I have a set of four Pip Net reamers made by a Swiss company that I like, because they do a good job on the bottom of the bowl, but some pipes are too large or two small for them. Coarse sandpaper, wrapped round a wooden dowel or even a finger, can be used for reducing the thickness of the carbon cake in lieu of a tool, and some prefer it despite it being a bit more work to use. It is also cheap. The adjustable reamer, or a set of reamers, will usually cost $30 to $40 new, though you may be able to get one used for a fraction of that price. </p>
<p>Finally, you may want to use buffing and polishing compounds on the mouthpiece, or take the cleaned pipe in to a pipe shop and have them do the buffing and polishing. The cost is usually small. As mentioned, I use a Dunhill Pipe Care Cloth to wax a cleaned pipe, but one can also get a can of Briar Wipe from a pipe shop and use it to make your own &#8220;pipe care cloth.&#8221; </p>
<p>1. Sanitizing the Bowl </p>
<p>The bowl will be sanitized wherever heated thoroughly by combustion of tobacco. If the previous owner did not smoke to the bottom of the bowl, you will need to deal with this area in the manner described for the shank,below. Otherwise, simply ream the carbon cake in the bowl to the thickness of a dime or less (1 mm or less). </p>
<p>2. Sanitizing the Mouthpiece </p>
<p>Remove the mouthpiece from the pipe. If stuck, try putting it in the refrigerator or a freezer for 15 to 20 minutes and then turning it to free up and remove it. </p>
<p>Remove any metal gadgets or filters. If you expect to sell the pipe later, clean them and put them in storage. Otherwise, discard them. If stuck, you may need to soak the mouthpiece in alcohol to dissolve the crud and allow removal. </p>
<p>Use pipe cleaners wet with alcohol to scrub the interior and exterior of the mouthpiece clean. First soaking the mouthpiece in alcohol makes it easier to get the crud out with the pipe cleaners. </p>
<p>Once clean and dry, use vaseline, cold cream, or any protective coating to cover any logos or lettering on the mouthpiece you wish to keep. Otherwise, the bleach will dissolve them. Apply to a clean dry surface, or the protective coating may detach and allow bleach to go under it and destroy. </p>
<p>Then soak the mouthpiece in chlorine laundry bleach. Check the mouthpiece after a couple of hours, and if the mouthpiece is rapidly dissolving remove it, rinse it, and go on to the next process in cleaning. Otherwise, I would leave the mouthpiece in the bleach overnight, or perhaps for a full 24 hours, before taking it out and rinsing it. Clean one last time with an alcohol-wet pipe cleaner, and if more crud comes out put the mouthpiece back in the bleach for a longer soak. </p>
<p>If a metal gadget breaks off in the mouthpiece, you can soak the mouthpiece in bleach until the metal is dissolved. Use a pipe cleaner a couple of times a day to remove any corroded metal that will flake off, and eventually all will dissolve and corrode away. It may take a week or more, but it works. </p>
<p>After the chlorine bleach soak, the mouthpiece will be very rough. You can leave it as is, rub it with olive oil, or use buffing compounds and polishes to smooth and polish the surface. Or have a pipe shop buff and polish it for you. I used to use a multi-speed Dremel tool with felt buffing wheels, emery, tripoli, white, and plastic buffing compounds, and the Dunhill Pipe Care Cloth for waxing. A Fordham or big buffing wheels work better, faster, and easier, but are much more expensive. If you have the big buffing wheels, Tripoli Green for rough work, Diamond White for a smooth finish, and carnauba wax for the ultimate in gloss works fine, but you will need a little practice to gain skill. </p>
<p>I now have a set of 8-inch buffing wheels. There is a world of difference, but also considerable difference in cost. </p>
<p>3. Leaching and Sanitizing the Shank </p>
<p>While the mouthpiece is soaking or being worked on, sit the pipe up so the lowest part of the bowl opening and the lowest part of the opening in the shank are about level. Fill the bowl and shank with alcohol. Use of an eye dropper makes filling without spilling easy. </p>
<p>Allow the alcohol to sit for hours, topping up every hour or so if the alcohol is evaporating rapidly. Then dump out the alcohol, wipe out the interior of the bowl with a piece of paper towel, and use alcohol-wet pipe cleaners to clean out and scrub the interior of the shank. This is where the bristly pipe cleaners and little brush come in handy. </p>
<p>How long to let the alcohol sit in the bowl is a matter of choice. I recommend at least 4 hours, and often fill the bowl and shank first thing in the morning and (after topping up several times during the day) dump the alcohol and clean the shank that evening. I scrub the interior of the shank until no brown residues remain, and the wood is bare and clean. If there are no brown residues for the pipe cleaners to pick up, but they are turning yellow from tobacco juices leached from the wood, I will sit the pipe up again, refill with alcohol, and leach the bowl and shank with alcohol again. </p>
<p>4. The Professor&#8217;s Pipe-Sweetening Treatment </p>
<p>To complete sanitizing the pipe, and finish up leaching residues from the wood, fill the bowl and shank with a slurry of salt and alcohol, sit the pipe up, and leave it until all the alcohol evaporates. </p>
<p>A nice set of instructions is available at http://www.pipes.org, written by Dennis Congos, a &#8220;Carolina Briar Friar.&#8221; My version of the treatment is as follows: </p>
<p>First fill the shank with salt, and using an eye dropper add alcohol until that salt is saturated. Then fill the bowl perhaps two-thirds full of salt, and add alcohol until that is saturated. Then, finish filling the bowl with salt, sit the pipe up as it had been when filled with alcohol, and add more alcohol until any more alcohol would spill out. </p>
<p>When all alcohol has evaporated (usually 2 to 7 days later, depending on the weather and humidity), dump all the salt out and clean the pipe one last time with alcohol-wet pipe cleaners. If they come out dirty, you may need to do some more cleaning. </p>
<p>Allow the wood to dry. Then reassemble the pipe, with attention to the fit of the mouthpiece in the shank. Usually the fit will be ok. Sometimes it will be too tight, and you will need to coat the tenon of the mouthpiece with beeswax, or scribble pencil lead on it, or use graphite lubricant. If too loose, use beeswax to coat the tenon (when the shank becomes warm from the smoke, the beeswax will penetrate into the wood and cause it to swell slightly, tightening up the fit), or put a little water or saliva on the wood inside the mortise to encourage the wood to swell. If terribly loose, you may need to heat the tenon, shove a tapered metal cylinder into it to expand it(a nail set works ok, and sets of tapered cylinders can be had for about $10 that are made specifically for this purpose), and coolthe tenon under running water. Check for fit. If too tight, heat and allow to cool, which will cause the rubber to shrink back toward original shape and size. If still too loose, repeat the expansion process. </p>
<p>If your cleaning has removed all, or almost all, of the carbon cake in the bottom of the bowl, or if there was none to start with, you will need to break in the pipe as if it were new. Otherwise, simply load up the pipe, light up, and enjoy.</p>

<p>The Professor&#8217;s Pipe-Sweetening Treatment</p>
<p>Dennis Congos has enjoyed his three trips to the UK armed with the Pipesmokers Welcome Guide. As a thank-you this article arrived post haste from Charlotte where dwells this &#8220;Carolina Briar Friar&#8221; &#8211; specially for your delectation. At one point Dennis says: &#8220;Find a location where the pipe may be set in a semi-upright position.&#8221; In combination with the alcohol intake, this reminded me of my favorite uncle who had no problem finding locations in a selection of Southampton pubs.</p>
<hr />Many people have asked me to make available a step by step set of instructions for my method of sweetening up a pipe. It is in response to my friends that I compose this article. The treatment really works and may result in the finest smoke you ever had from your pipes.</p>
<p>In 25 years of pipe smoking and collecting, I have found no better treatment for rejuvenating a tired pipe. The first smoke after the Professor&#8217;s Treatment is a joy known by few, to date.</p>
<p>Tobacco contains oils. When combustion occurs, some of these oils are released and are deposited on the inside of the bowl, in the existing cake and in the shank of the pipe. In time, the oils mix with oxygen and turn rancid which is one reason for a bitter or sour taste in a pipe. It is the accumulation of these oils that prevents a pipe from delivering a sweet flavourful smoke. They can be dissolved and removed with the Professor&#8217;s Treatment, restoring that faithful beauty to the delicious, mouth-watering, nut-like sweetness of a well-seasoned pipe.</p>
<ol>
<li>The first step requires certain materials. You need a box of non-iodized salt easily found in any supermarket and a quantity of _pure_ alcohol. I suggest you have clean rag, facial tissues or paper towels handy to wipe up any errant alcohol lest it dull the bowl finish. Remember, the salt and the alcohol are to be consumed by your pipe so it will smell good, lower your blood pressure and taste sweet. If you consume the salt and alcohol, you will smell bad, raise your high blood pressure and be drunk. And when you sober up, your pipe will still taste like you are smoking cube cut gnu manure.</li>
<li>The second step involves preparing the pipe. Empty any dottle remaining in the bowl. Some people prefer to remove the stem and insert a pipe cleaner in the shank during the process. Others leave the stem in place. Find a location where the pipe may be set in a semi-upright position to prevent the salt and alcohol from spilling or leaking over the top of the bowl or running out the shank.</li>
<li>Fill the bowl of the pipe with salt all the way to the top. Some believe also filling the shank with salt will maximize the sweetening effect. Others, as stated above, insert a pipe cleaner in the stem to prevent salt from entering. Try it both ways and choose whichever variation gives you the most desirable results.</li>
<li>After filling the bowl with salt, it&#8217;s time to add the alcohol. This may be done in several ways. One method entails using an eyedropper placing 8 to 10 drops of alcohol on the salt. A second way involves slowly pouring in alcohol, allowing it to rise to the top of the salt filled bowl. A third way has the salt placed in the bowl in a series of 3 to 5 layers with a few drops of alcohol added to each layer. And a fourth method requires filling the bowl about halfway with alcohol and then topping it off to the brim with salt. Again, I suggest you try each method and choose the one you like best. They are all variations on the same theme which is to achieve a desired admixture with which to entice the gods of sweetness to again reside in the chambers of your pipe.</li>
<li>This step is always the most difficult part for me because it requires doing nothing. The time necessary for the salt and alcohol potion to do its magic varies from 8 hours to several days. Some advocate that total evaporation of the alcohol must occur before the salt is removed. Others find that total evaporation isn&#8217;t necessary. Experiment and see which produces the best results for you. Of course, the more alcohol is added the longer it takes to evaporate. In my experience, I have found that 10 to 15 drops in a bowl full of salt will dry in about 24 hours and result in as much sweetness and good taste as any of the other methods.</li>
<li>After waiting the chosen time interval, it is time to remove the salt and any remaining spirits of alcohol. Take a pipe tool and poke through the hard brown/black crust which has formed in the bowl. The darkening results as the rancid tars and oils are drawn out of the cake and into the salt by some mysterious process.I have found that thicker cakes produce darker salt. I do not recommend removing the cake that you have worked so hard to build. The cake is a product of a cooperative effect between person (puffing) and nature (tobacco) providing protection against burn-out. It also reduces tongue bite and is a significant factor in producing a sweet and mild smoke.Remove the salt from the bowl by pouring, scraping, brushing, blowing or by throwing it over your left shoulder for good luck. But by all means don&#8217;t draw on the pipe before removing all of the discoloured salt.Run a pipe cleaner through the stem several times to remove any last grains of salt. Salt often lurks in the cave-like darkness of the stem hoping to ambush unsuspecting taste buds as you comfortably sit back and draw your first long anticipated puff of angels breath.</li>
<li>Assuming you have followed the steps listed above pretty much in order, allowing for one or two variations of style, your pipe is ready to smoke. Fill it with your favourite tobacco and prepare yourself for an exciting, pleasurable smoking experience.</li>
</ol>

Occasionally, however, a pipe may begin to taste bitter or &#8220;sour.&#8221; Sometimes this is caused by not allowing the pipe sufficient time to &#8220;rest&#8221; between smokes; other times, no cause can be determined with certainty. In any event, such a pipe can usually be rejuvenated by applying the &#8220;Professor&#8217;s Pipe-Sweetening Treatment,&#8221; publicized by Dennis Congos.</span></h3>
<p style="margin-top: 0.4em; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.5em; margin-left: 0px; line-height: 1.5em;">First, find some salt (non-iodized is preferred, but not essential), some alcohol (preferably &#8220;Everclear,&#8221; or some other form of near-pure, non-denatured ethanol), and a place to rest your pipe in a semi-upright position. Insert a pipe cleaner into the stem of the pipe so that it extends into the shank. Fill the bowl to the rim with salt and drip or carefully pour alcohol into the bowl until the salt is just saturated. Try not to get any alcohol on the pipe&#8217;s exterior, as this may damage the finish; any spills should be wiped up immediately. Leave the pipe alone for a day or two. After this time the salt will have turned brown from the absorption of &#8220;tars&#8221; from the bowl. Thoroughly clean all salt from the bowl and set the pipe aside overnight to dry completely. Your pipe will now be revitalized, and all traces of bitterness should be gone.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 0.4em; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.5em; margin-left: 0px; line-height: 1.5em;">WARNING: Many people swear by this process, but the procedure is not risk-free. Some people have had pipes crack after this treatment, particularly when they allowed the salt and alcohol mixture to enter the pipe&#8217;s shank and/or when they left the mixture in the pipe for several days. Any pipe with significant monetary or sentimental value should be sent to a professional pipe repair person.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 0.4em; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.5em; margin-left: 0px; line-height: 1.5em;">You might also want to give the stem draft-hole a thorough cleaning by periodically cleaning it with a scrubbing bristle pipecleaner dipped in alcohol or a &#8220;pipe sweetener&#8221;.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 0.4em; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.5em; margin-left: 0px; line-height: 1.5em;">G.L. Pease also offers a more effective method:</p>
<p style="margin-top: 0.4em; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.5em; margin-left: 0px; line-height: 1.5em;">&#8220;I reamed the pipe almost back to bare wood, pre-heated my electric oven to 220°F, and turned it off. After removing the pipe&#8217;s stem, I filled the bowl with activated charcoal pellets purchased from the local aquarium supply shop. Placing the pipe on a soft towel in the oven, I left it to sit while the oven cooled &#8211; about an hour&#8230; No perceptible difference was detected.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 0.4em; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.5em; margin-left: 0px; line-height: 1.5em;">A couple of conversations with Trever Talbert, friend, pipesmith extraordinaire, and constant experimenter with briar, provided an important piece of information; briar heats very slowly. He explained that it could take several hours for a piece of briar&#8217;s temperature gradient to reach equilibrium with the ambient temperature. Clearly, my pipe&#8217;s short stint in the Sauna was insufficient to do the job.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 0.4em; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.5em; margin-left: 0px; line-height: 1.5em;">I reheated the oven, this time setting the thermostat to 180°F, knowing from my tests that the temperature in my empty oven would vary between about 180°F and a bit over 200°F, well below the temperature at which the briar would scorch. Stemless and empty, I placed the bowl on its towel in the oven, on the upper rack, far away from the source of radiant heat, where it would be left to sit for three hours.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 0.4em; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.5em; margin-left: 0px; line-height: 1.5em;">After removing the now hot pipe, I filled the bowl with the activated charcoal, and placed it back in the oven for an additional three hours. When the pipe was finally removed, and emptied of the charcoal, there was absolutely no trace of its prior scent &#8230; After allowing the pipe to cool overnight, the stem was refitted, the bowl filled with a favored blend, delicate enough to allow any vestigial flavors from the pipe to come through clearly. I sat down to experience the fruits of my labors. Success! Only at the very bottom of the bowl was a slight hint of the previous aroma, and this disappeared completely after a couple of smokes.&#8221;</p>

<p>The process of filling a pipe is simple, yet important to smoking pleasure. If the chamber is packed too tightly with too few air spaces the pipe will go out easily and have to be relit often. A pipe packed too loosely will burn hot and fast.</p>
<p>The proper way to fill your pipe is in pinches. The first pinch at the bottom should be tamped down with your fingers ever so lightly to leave a maximum of air between tobacco leaves at the bottom of the bowl. Tamp the second tamp down a little more firmly, the third tamp more firmly still, and so on till the pipe is filled.</p>
<p>However, when you “break in” a new pipe, the pipe is only partially filled with tobacco – this is covered in more details in one of the following paragraphs.</p>
<p>The way you fill your pipe will depend on the tobacco you are using. Ribbon cut tobacco holds more air and should be tamped a little firmer. A coarse or plug tobacco may leave too little air and smoke slower, requiring relighting if not filled with care. Good fresh tobacco will pack tightly and may also form blockages and areas in the chamber with too little air for proper combustion. Dry tobacco will fill easier, but will smoke hotter and less enjoyably.</p>
<p>As you fill the pipe, draw through the mouthpiece to check on the air flow. If it draws too easily, tamp down a little more firmly. If it is difficult to draw, empty your bowl and start again or you will find yourself constantly relighting your pipe.</p>
<p>Filling one’s pipe is an art in itself. As your expertise grows you will find your skill a source of great satisfaction.</p>
