Peterson’s Sherlock Holmes Tobacco Review
I excitedly purchased this tin about a year a half ago, expecting great things from this aromatic that dawned the name of the pipe legend himself. When I opened the tin I was met with a very powerful fig/fruity aroma. I am sad to say that smoking was not nearly as exciting as the aroma, it was almost tasteless, it about charred my tongue and it seemed to burn very wet. Needless to say I was very disappointed. Almost sure that I would never try it again I put it in the bottom of my tobacco bag and forgot about it. Then about two weeks ago I caught a glimpse of the purple tin and thought, who knows maybe 18 months of aging did something magical to old Sherlock. It sure did! I am now a huge believer in aging tobacco, the tongue bite went away, it had dried out enough to make it a cool smoke, and the taste and room note seemed to even change. The smell and taste reminded my of sitting in an elk lodge with friends. It is musty, with a touch of sweetness. If you are a fan of aromatics like I am, buy some Sherlock Holmes and then immediately forget about it. No offense Sherlock. Happy smoking.

Hey Sean, what a nice post. I will keep an eye out for this in London and see if I can manage to hold off smoking it for 18 months.
Do you think it will make a difference if I don’t open the tin?
Have you any ideas where I can get this in London? I will try JJ Fox and Davidoff first I think.
Looks like I might have to give this another try. I bought a tin, and my thoughts were the same as yours.
Thanks for the comment, defiantly let me know what your thoughts are if you ever decide to give it another go.
I had the exact same experience with Sherlock Holmes tobacco. The first time I smoke dit I dod not like it at all. Tasted flat and burned my tongue.
After I let it sit for a few months and tried it again, it is already better. No tongue-bite and a nice taste.
Thanks for the comments Nic and Kevin. Nic I’m not sure where a good place in London is. Any London readers out there know? You could always try purchasing online. I think if you let the tin sit unopened it would be best. However I would let it dry out a bit before smoking after aging it.

same here, First time smoking was exactly like the ops. But letting it sit for just 2 months gave it a nice smooth, biteless texture. FYI ive ben told if you dedicate a pipe to this blend it realy brings out the flavor after 10th bowl or so. I do have a question, I read on another review that this tobacco produces a greasy plug at the end of the smoke.and that if left out to dry it can be smoked. Is this true? and has anyone done this? I havnt ben smoking this blend long enough to find out. Im just curious.
Matt I’m not sure about the plug at the end. I typically smoke it all the way to the end without problems so I have not experianced this. Thanks for the comment and for visiting.
