My first–and still my default–pipe is a Peterson with a P-lip mouthpiece, so I come at this from the other direction. I found that it took me a while before I could smoke a pipe with a traditional mouthpiece comfortably. I think I smoke hotter (quicker?) because of the p-lip and have had to learn to slow down when smoking most other pipes.

TBombadil and Preston, thanks for your thoughts. I think I may have to just give the p-Lip some time. I’ve got a few friends that smoke them and love them. I’ll post an update soon.

I find the p-Lip more comfortable if you “break it in” a bit. After a few weeks, the bit conforms to your teeth better.
I really am not sure if they help reduce tongue bite or not. But they seem somewhat helpful when smoking full bents, as they limit the amount of saliva that goes down the stem. May be good for wet smokers.
Finally, they are a very classic part of the Peterson concept. I find my Pete’s with the p-Lip seem a little more “authentic” to me…..

I felt that way at first re the p-lips but then I got a Pete System 307. I now have four and love them. I don’t think anyone makes a bent like Peterson.

I’m in the dislike camp. I tried, I really did, but the hot smoke stream burns the roof of my mouth and I can’t find a comfortable bite with the P-Lip. I always buy Petersons now with fishtail bits. The one pipe I had with a P-lip got trimmed off and the button reshaped and re-drilled.

Andrew, I tend to agree.every time I consider coming back to this pipe i go for another simply because of the p-lip. I need to give it another shot this weekend. Thanks for the comment.
