Peterson P-Lip Mouthpiece Review

Peterson P-Lip Mouthpiece Review

I just purchased my first Peterson with the P-lip mouthpiece. The Peterson P-lip mouthpiece  (pictured below)  is suppose to direct the smoke upwards towards the roof of the mouth instead of the tongue. This is intended to produce a drier and less biting smoke than when smoke is directed at the tongue, as with other pipes.  During my first smoke I actually found the opposite to be true this mouthpiece.  My opinion is that if you have been smoking a pipe for years and try this new system, the smoke actually hits a entirely new area of your mouth which causes more irritation rather than less.  I also found that it was more difficult to hold in mouth than a fishtail.  I think that I can and will get used to this, however I was less then impressed after my first smoke.

Most folks either hate them or love them. I fall into the hate them category.

Andrew, I tend to agree.every time I consider coming back to this pipe i go for another simply because of the p-lip. I need to give it another shot this weekend. Thanks for the comment.

I’m in the dislike camp. I tried, I really did, but the hot smoke stream burns the roof of my mouth and I can’t find a comfortable bite with the P-Lip. I always buy Petersons now with fishtail bits. The one pipe I had with a P-lip got trimmed off and the button reshaped and re-drilled.

Mouse that is a great idea! I might have to try the reshaping of the p-lip. Thanks for the idea.

I felt that way at first re the p-lips but then I got a Pete System 307. I now have four and love them. I don’t think anyone makes a bent like Peterson.

I find the p-Lip more comfortable if you “break it in” a bit. After a few weeks, the bit conforms to your teeth better.
I really am not sure if they help reduce tongue bite or not. But they seem somewhat helpful when smoking full bents, as they limit the amount of saliva that goes down the stem. May be good for wet smokers.
Finally, they are a very classic part of the Peterson concept. I find my Pete’s with the p-Lip seem a little more “authentic” to me…..

TBombadil and Preston, thanks for your thoughts. I think I may have to just give the p-Lip some time. I’ve got a few friends that smoke them and love them. I’ll post an update soon.

My first–and still my default–pipe is a Peterson with a P-lip mouthpiece, so I come at this from the other direction. I found that it took me a while before I could smoke a pipe with a traditional mouthpiece comfortably. I think I smoke hotter (quicker?) because of the p-lip and have had to learn to slow down when smoking most other pipes.

im regularly wandering about the net nearly all of the week which means that I have a tendency to read significantly, which isn’t commonly a beneficial factor as most of the online resources I look at are made up of unnecessary trash copied from similar internet sites a million times, but I’ll hand it to ya this webpage is in truth not bad at all and has got a bit of genuine material, for that reason cheers for smashing the fad of merely copying other people’s blogs and forums, in case you ever wanna have fun with playing a couple of hands of facebook poker together let me know – you have my email address :)
